BIG SHOULDERS

Wellnot as big as they used to be physically but my mental and emotional shoulders are definitely making up for that losslol.  What the heck does this have to do with fitness, my life, my healthI say everything!
When you are in a position of internet personality, helping people from around the world, bravely putting yourself out there for all to see through images, videos, and opinionswellthe mental shoulders get well developed.   As you know, I am a say it like it is person, trainer, consultant, coach, expert and any other name that gets tagged onto Darla the fitness gal.  In this position, I MUST remain POSITIVE  and let things roll off my back like a duck sometimes.  The majority of the time, I am taken with appreciation, and thankfulness from so many for providing the hope they thought was never possibletouching to me as my purpose to help has been accomplished.
The other side of the coin can be exactly the opposite and filled with statements from people who do not take the time to know ME and jump into an attitude of sharing only judgments and negative comments.  I can read through that into an unhappy soul who really wants to be healthy and the BEST, but not at a place in their life and unwilling to make that happen, and it is always easiest to lash out at someone than take responsibility for self.   ReallyI would like to reach out and give all those people a hugNOI really dobecause they just need to have the encouragement and love to realize their fabulous potential.

I do not need to go into statement details but anyone who sits in my position as a fitness expert who has put themselves out there understands the lashings that can come in reference to a fit body, workouts,  personal life, sharing success stories, making opinions and comments, and even recipes for crying out loud.  I was taught never to judge a book by its cover and this is so important in life, but especially in what I do for a living as I see people of all shapes and sizesand they are ALL FABULOUS!!!  Could you imagine if I was a judgmental personwellNO WAYI could not do my job if I was running people into the ground for being too heavy, too skinny, low self esteem, body image issues, hairstyle, clothes, and the list can go on and onhow in the world would I MOTIVATE or help anyone with that mindsetI mean what in the heck is up with a judgmental mentality anyway.  Who am I to judgeam I GodNOI am Darla, the person who just so happens to come to YOU daily through different internet mediums to In Your Face MOTIVATE YOU.
I LOVE my Big Shoulders because they provide me with emotional strength and the ability to not sweat the small stuff in this life.  They give me a very caring spirit and the understanding that negative statements usually come from people who are truly hurting, bitter from personal issues or life events not dealt with yet, and who really want and need help, but just do not know how to be vulnerable enough to let those feelings out in a healthy way to start the healing process.  In my position of trainer, consultant and coach, I wear many hats, and during the times of hearing or receiving negative comments, I throw on the coaching/therapist hat and become the BEST listener in this moment, keying in on any details that I may be able to offer help, dig deep into who that person is, provide insight and  validation, but at the same time, provide the guidance that saysHEYTODAY is a new day and time to toss the old crap to the curb and begin a new healthy lifestyleyou get the picture.
The beautiful part about my life is that I choose to be POSITIVE in ALL circumstances,  personally surround myself with people who will nourish my soul in a positive way, and lean on one of my favorite quotes that states Life is 10% What Happens to You and 90% How You Respond to It.   Does that mean that I avoid all negative people, situations, and comments in my workof course notthis is not realistic in my position…I am surrounded by people on a daily basis physically and online who are going through things that they are healing from or do not even realize they need help with, and all that is needed are some Big Shoulders to take on the task of helping and healing.  Am I ever offended by such comments and sucked down to a point of OH MYWHY DO I CONTINUE TO PUT MYSELF OUT THERE.wellthe answer is a Big Hell No.  If anything, I feel challenged to help even moreI always have HOPE, always PERSEVERE, and do not believe in failurein fact, in my opinion, failure is GOOD and a stepping stone to dusting off and becoming a better person.  In this journey called life, I will continue to develop my Big Shoulders, continue to MOTIVATEsome may like me and some may notthat is OK and out of my controlbut I will push forward with the cause of helping people adapt healthy livesand for my Big ShouldersABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!  Stay Healthy~

FIT TO BE TIED

FIT TO BE TIED

YEPI am FIT to be TIEDall in a very good way of course.  Since my wedding anniversary is this month, I thought it would be FITTING to talk about fitness, marriage and anything else that may pop into my head as I put these thoughts together.
First let me say that I consider my marriage to Don as one of the most defining successes in my lifeit has taken half my life to get to this place, but the journey was worth the prize and I thank God every day for such a fabulous man to share my life.  I love that wordSHAREand the beautiful part is that my journey in this life continues in a new way, as I grow daily as my own person, but also right alongside my partner, friend and husband.   Does that mean that everything is perfect, fairytale adventure, Cinderella landwell of course notwhat it does mean is that through this journey of life, the challenges brought our way are now met with a fabulous combination of what two people bring to the table, faith that is shared, and a depth of connection that feels stronger than steel.
OUR WEDDING DAY
Whewdeep stuff but important at the same time.  Now lets get down to being fit and marriage and you know mesay it like it is gal with my life to MOTIVATE you, but you know whatI love to write, have a passion to share and the two together just workhence my Blogand anything goes, so here it goes
What the heck does fitness and health have to do with marriagereally???  OKhealth and marriage go hand in hand in my opinion. Marriage certainly IS NOT a free pass to FRUMP landOH MY and NO WAY.  I really do not understand this mentality because it truly says I do not care about myselfand further shouts that I do not care about my spouse.   Not for this girlI do love myself and my spouse and believe that this temple of a body that I have been blessed with is going to continue to be blessed with healthy food, regular exercise and continue to be the BEST version of ME pre and post marriage.  I mean there was an initial attraction that brought me and my hubby together, and I appreciated the respect and care he took of himself.  That respect and care does not end at the I Do otherwise why not say I Dont.  I have heard both sexes say things like Oh I am married now, so I do not have to impress anymore HOW SAD is that.  I do not mean to offend in any way with my candid writing, but subjects like this get left on the back burners and not brought to the forefront.
I certainly believe that the couple that plays together, stays togetherand I mean all physical activity whether a workout, walk, run, hike, tossing a ball around, Frisbee, water sports, playful wrestling and SEX!  YESI said it and YESit is an important part of a healthy marriage, and studies show that a very active session can burn up to 200 caloriesOH YEAH!   Who does not want to feel sexyI know I doand being a healthy person is what helps fulfill this part of my life.  There is no part of letting myself go that supports being and feeling sexy and in fact would strip me of my self confidence.  I am being real here about health and marriage and I am definitely NOT going to fall into some nonsense idea that marriage ends my health, begins the era of over sized sweat clothes, and says goodbye to all the beautiful parts of who I am.  I would have to say that it has enhanced it even more as I do want to be and feel sexy for my husbandam I saying I am being fit for himNObut in a wayYES.  It all works together and the want to be healthy for myself spills into the importance of being healthy for him.  I mean.reallywho does not like to hearBABE YOU ARE HOT!!!
The other part of being healthy and married is that I want to be with my hubby for as long as I can on this earth and taking care of me is not a guarantee, but definitely increases the probability that this will occur.  Letting myself go for example comes with horrific side effects such as obesity, increased risk of disease, heart issuesand you know the list can go on and on.OKBIG HELL NO to that.  It comes down to a healthy respect for me, my husband, and our marriage.  Sometimes I would like to shake some sense into the married ones out there and say what the heck are you doing and what kind of examples are you setting for your little ones?  Marriage is definitely not about the ball and chain, never going to be happy again, with the same person, there goes the sex life, no more friends, what a nag, etc. and if you are thinking like this as a married personWHY?
Marriage is a CHOICE just like taking care of our health is a CHOICE and both are wonderful journeys that are happening simultaneouslytake care of it, respect it, love it, treat it the way it should be treated and the reward is happiness and health for as long as the RIGHT CHOICES continue.   I know the more I treat both my health and marriage with these qualities, the happier I am as a woman and wife.  Getting back to being fit in the processwell that is a side effect of the healthy qualities that I incorporate daily and I WANT to last for my marriage lifetime.

I AM HEALTHY, NOT OBSESSED

I believe in being healthy when it comes to exercise and eating clean for the large percentage of my week.  Why do I bring the word obsessed into this picturewell…here it is in a nutshelljust as with anything else, too much of anything or an obsessive attitude can bring about an unhealthy balance in liferegardless of how good it is.   If I was spending hours on end exercising, putting exercise above everything in my life to the point of letting it interfere or negatively impact my life, relationships, and selfNO  GOOD.  I mean reallycan you imagine if a scenario went like thisI am invited for the day to relax at a spa with hubby, or attend an important function with my family and I said nope gotta exercise, or I need to be late so that I can get my workout inOKnow that would be OBSESSIVE.
I am not saying that exercise is not important, it definitely is a lifestyle along with my nutrition, but I am talking about for examplethe old habits of Darla from my competition days, and sometimes modeling where obsessive did enter the picture now and then.  Not cutting myself any slack with food and working beyond my physical meansYUCK.  What the heck was I thinkingmy A1 personality type was definitely on hyper mode during my obsessive days.  What I am saying is that a good thing can be overboard or obsessive and cause more harm than goodin all aspects of lifephysical, mental, and spiritual.   Probably the worst would be complete burnout of a repeated behaviormy fitness would be a have to instead of a want toOH MY and NO WAY.  I want my healthy life to be a fun lifestyle, maintainable by consistent exercise and healthy food intake for the majority of the timesomething I look forward to doing and just feel weird if I dont.
My Fabulous Friend and Hubby
I am so glad to be in a much more relaxed older, wiser, better place with balance and I truly enjoy all moments in life.  I am not going to lie and say that I never struggle with letting go of a day of exercise because sometimes I dothe rearing of old ugly habits knocking on my mental door.  Thank goodness for a more relaxed hubby who balances me out really well when I need a verbal chat to bring the sometimes Over Do It Darla back to reality.  Being healthy is definitely a FABULOUS description of my lifestyleOBSESSED well, when that word gets tossed my wayI greet it with a Stay Healthy Smile!

ENJOYING MY COFFEE BREAK

Charging the Hormones!
The warm mug cupped in my hand as the aroma drifts into my face, a sip here and there as I take in a morning peaceful moment all cuddled on the sofa with my feet tucked under myselfawwwsounds like a hallmark moment, or commercial that will definitely sell coffeelolbut I am going to bring this to an abrupt HALT.  OKrewind to a few months ago when I woke to have my usual cup of coffee with splash of non-fat French vanilla creamerON MYyescant do coffee straight up, and to my unsettling surpriseREJECTEDOH MYOH WHY.  I do not know if you have ever experienced this, but all of a sudden I needed a coffee breakI mean a break from coffeesniff sniff.  Believe me I tried for two mornings in a row, and the same resultblahhhhYUCK.
I was even feeling dragged down by the coffee and not perked up as usualalthough I only drink half/calf anywaybut stillmy body just was not feeling the love for the coffee.  I do take a few sips from my hubbys mug just to test drive and although OKit is not driving me to grab my own mug down and pour a cup.  Hmmmm.OKI have been taking a break for at least 2 months now and I must say, I feel less tension, some weight loss (which I definitely do not need), and the added benefit of no stains on the pearly whites at least for awhile.  I am not saying I am giving up coffeemaybe it is the hot summer months that has put the kibosh on my morning time with my warm cup.
Studies show many health benefits in coffee and my one cup intake per day satisfied thatbut now I will just have to make do with the rest of my healthy meals.  I have to admit that when my body responded well to the caffeinemeaning OKthis girl is ready to workoutI enjoyed that.  But truly, it got to where it felt like this backfired, and I no longer felt a surge of energy from the small amount of stimulant in a half/calf cup.  Sothis made it easier to give up for awhile and I must say that I am enjoying my coffee break.
When I feel a lack of energy now, I will not blame it onmanI did not have my coffeeI can truly sayOK Darlanot enough rest, more recovery after that hard workout is needed, and the biggie as an almost 50 year young womanHORMONE changesYUCK.  Yes, hormones have much to do with how peri-menopausal and menopausal women feel.  I am definitely riding the peri journey right now and doing lots of research as my own health advocate.   I will say that I am so happy that watermelon season is here and I am eating pumpkin seeds like no other.
I am not a woman who requires a JOLT to workout, so coffee on hold is OK in that area.  I hear so many people say OH MYI just dont have the energy to workout without my caffeine or energy drink fixreally????  OKwhy does anyone need to be dependent on something to function through a workoutthis is not healthy.  I can understand the occasionalman do I need a cup of coffee this morning, but when it becomes a dependence to functionnot for this girl.  I do look forward to when my body says OKYAHOOloving coffee but for now I will enjoy my coffee break;)

Balance, Life, and Vacation

On Vacation!
If you tuned into my last Blog, you may have figured out that I was going on vacationwellI DID and had a blastexcept for the nasty scrape and bruise to my bootie that I am still healing from talk about a pain in the backsideYIKESI will go more into that in a bit.  Let me just tell you that I am a simple gal and when it comes to our boat trips, I pack light because we are usually in swim suits most of the time, dont wear makeupdont need it and rarely wear it anyway, lots of sunscreennon-stinging waterproof please, Burts Bees lip balm, and my MUST have leave in spray conditioner to get out the tangles from lots of swimming;)Woo Hoo that is what I am talking aboutsimplicity as its vacation BEST.
When Friday came, I took my watch off and did not concern myself with what time it was for one full weekno time constraint, no schedulesAHHHsuch a free feeling to do whatever I wanted, when I wanted without hurry, deadline, and just reading my body for eating times and sleepingand of course enjoying quality time with hubby, boating fun and the great outdoors.  It truly seems like life should be this simple, this stress free most of the time.  I think it is important to MAKE IT HAPPENto schedule those down time moments to really appreciate what life is all aboutit is definitely not about the GO GO GO, and  DONT STOP TILL YOU DROP lifeNOT FOR ME.
One of our Coves
Deer Sighting!!!
Did I freak out knowing I was not going to be getting in my normal workoutsmaybe at first and only for a second this girl was ready to go.  Actually, I was looking forward to giving my body a rest, plugging into some meditation, being creative with active rest, and truly taking in LIFE.  Not that I do not do that on a daily basis, but sometimes, a deeper spending of time to appreciate everything around me is in order.  Also, taking a vacation is a good way to prevent burn out by taking a break from the things that are done day in and day out.  I come back with a renewed sense of being each timeI LOVE THAT.
Was I going to rebel and throw all my healthy philosophies out the windowof course NOT.  Was I going to provide leniency to enjoy things that I typically would not partake in moderationa BIG YES!  Life is about balance, about living, about enjoying, about BEING REALthat is who I amREAL.  Please do not think that I am some super fitness freak who spends hours in the gym working out, and only eating boiled chicken, steamed broccoli and egg whitesWRONG.  Not to say that these items are not in my nutrition planbut reallyif you have seen my recipes, I am very much into great tasting food and lots of variety.  Our cooler was full of prepared meals of Quinoa with sun dried tomatoes, lean turkey meats, marinated chicken, spinach saladyou get the picture.  We did purchase some Organic Flax Meal Chips from Costco and I have to sayimpressed with the quality.  Important to intake a little salt when spending time in the heat in addition to lots of waterso a few chips here and there fueled this water girl.
OUR FAVORITE LAKE SHASTA COVE THIS YEAR!
Trail to Water slide
We launched at Lake Shasta, one of our favorite spots to putt around, swim, and create our own adventures.  Each day, we did what we wanted and were active by taking in   to 1 mile swims each day, having pull up contests off the boat dive platform, and hiking around off shore.  Nowgetting to the bootie injurya few minutes of fun for over a week of discomfortnext time I am bringing on the Charmin…lol.  OKwe discovered a Natural Rock Water Slide that existed off one of the coves, and although a bit of a hike to get thereit was absolutely beautiful and tropical lookingso many pools surrounded by golden rocksBREATHTAKING.  The end of paradise trail revealed the Rock Water Slidewell, a swim across the natural pool and climb up the rocks using a knotted rope was the only way to reach the top of the slide … I admit I was a bit nervous…it was a thrill for sure…but…the OH NO …bump bump bumpscraped my bootie on the rocks.
Water slide! I was able to find this pic online
Accomplished, but man did it tear a half dollar size deep raspberry on my tailbone areatalk about not being able to sit down for a weekthere you have itthis bootie will definitely be padded next time.  I seemed to be the only one with the bootie problem as I asked others coming off the slide if they hurt their tailboneno, no and nohmmmoh well.  I did witness people hiking all the way, and deciding not to try the adventure, but all was good funalways about the journey.  My hubby went down about 3 timesI was happy with my one time adventure especially with my backside burning when it hit the water.
Coming back from vacation is always bitter sweet, but it does feel good to get home, sleep in my own bed, get my ground legs back, and return to my routine.  I do return with a renewed sense of self as I shared earlier, feeling content, happy, and even more creatively sparked.  I enjoy seeing my clients and firing up my oven for some healthy baking.  The point I am trying to bring home is not how I burnt my bum on the water slide, but how important it is to take a step back, slow things down, get out of a rut, change things up, have some fun, and just be free for awhile, even if it is for a day, or even a week.  I know that balance is important  to my successful and happy life, helps to reduce stress, enables me to clear my head, and spend quality time not only with me but the best partspending time with my partner, friend, and love of my life.  Now that is FABULOUS in my Stay Healthy Book!
